An Extended Family Photography Session in the Blue Mountains
Updated: Mar 3, 2020
We LOVE photographing multigenerational and extended families. Anniversaries, holidays, reunions, birthdays and celebrations are some of the most special family times.
These special occasions can be rare, so it provides the perfect opportunity to be documented with professional quality family portraiture.

We were excited to not only celebrate and commemorate this 80th Birthday, but also to capture a professional extended family session to celebrate four generations in the Blue Mountains.
The idea was to capture some more formal photos of the four generations as well as each of the individual families. The autumn leaves and mountains were the perfect backdrop for the casual family portraiture.
We let the kids run and play between the larger group photos to keep them stimulated and co-operative.
Seizing the opportunity for professional family photographs can so easily slip by and you may feel like it is too hard to organise. We won't always have our older generations around and time passes by so quickly.
Many families have snaps on their devices of family occasions - often with one member missing - the person taking the photos!
Some tips and guide to simple and timeless extended family photos...
In our experience with photographing large multi-generational groups, we have learned that there are a few things to keep in mind when you are considering organising and booking this type of professional extended family photography session.
We urge you to think about and discuss what is it you would like to have at the end of the shoot? Make sure that everyone in the family agrees to the goals and outcome of the photography session. Some families only want a great photo of the whole group, others want individual family photos and individual portraits. We will chat to you about what you want collectively as a group so you can prepare and we meet everyone’s expectations. Because this is often a rare get-together of so many of you we suggest photographing lots of combinations and capturing relationships between your family members.
It is a great idea to appoint one member of the extended family to be the organiser and contact for the photography shoot. This way we can have a clear brief of what and who we need to photograph.
We suggest as a family to have a good talk about and agree on the style of the extended family photo session. Think about the best photography location, time of day and what is most important to you as a family. We have many locations that are perfect for larger groups that we can recommend for the best photography results. We are mobile photographers and we love to explore new areas or even come to your home.
